Why Proper Nutrition Matters for Your Aesthetic Results.
When we think of fillers and other aesthetic treatments, nutrition isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind. But here in sunny St. Pete, Florida, where healthy living and glowing skin are part of the lifestyle, what you put on your plate is just as important as what you do in the treatment chair.
Glowing Skin Starts From Within
The Link Between Nutrition and Aesthetic Treatments
Your skin is your largest organ, and just like the rest of your body, it relies on the nutrients you consume to heal, repair, maintain, and thrive. While injectables and skin treatments, like microneedling, offer quick improvements, your results will always be enhanced if your skin and body are nourished from within.
Hydration & Fillers: Hyaluronic acid fillers rely on your skin’s water content to look natural and plump. Dry skin and cracked lips are your first warning signs that you’re dehydrated. Ensuring you drink plenty of water and consuming foods that contain higher water concentrations (cucumbers, citrus and leafy greens) will help your filler settle beautifully.
Protein & Collagen: Lean protein helps support collagen and elastin production. If your body doesn’t have the building blocks (amino acids) from proteins, it cannot effectively support making good collagen and elastin.
Antioxidants & Skincare: Nutrient-rich foods like berries, spinach, and nuts fight free radical damage ultimately protecting your skin from environmental damage. This is especially critical in our sun-soaked St. Pete climate.
Healthy Fats & Glow: Omega-3 fatty acids helps to strengthen our skin’s barrier and helping to leave your skin glowing. If you have a weaker skin barrier, recovery from treatments (microneedling, chemical peels, or dermaplaning) can be prolonged. A healthy skin barrier is crucial for a glowing complexion.
Skincare + Nutrition: The Perfect Duo
The best skincare routine, the perfect toxin, and the perfect filler cannot overcome the effects of poor nutrition. Treatments like microneedling, chemical peels, and customized facials at Spindrift Aesthetics are designed to stimulate renewal, but they work best when your body has the essential building blocks it needs to repair skin at the cellular level.
Protein, Protein, Protein! I have many patients ask me, “does drinking collagen really help improve my skin?”. The simple answer is no, not directly. When we ingest collagen supplements, our stomach will break these collagen proteins down into amino acids and utilized them where they need to be used—skin, hair, nails, muscle, tissue repair, etc. However, if you’re deficient in protein intake, yes it can help improve your skin quality by supplementing what you’re lacking—protein. We need protein to help produce collagen and elastin—the structural supporters of our skin. Extreme weight loss, decreased protein intake, and dehydration will hamper your aesthetic results. How much protein do you need? A good rule of thumb for protein intake is 0.5-1.0 grams of protein per pound of body weight. For example, if you weight 120 pounds, you should be consuming 60-120 grams per day of protein.
Vitamin C: Consumption of Vitamin C helps to boost your collagen production as it is an important cofactor for the enzymes that help form strong, stable collagen fibers. Without proper Vitamin C consumption, collagen fibers are weak and poorly structured. Vitamin C helps our skin maintain firmness by helping produce healthy, strong collagen, and helps improve wound healing (very important after injectables, microneedling, or peels). Vitamin C also helps prevent damage to our skin from harmful UV rays, pollution, and stress. Vitamin C not only helps us make healthy collagen but helps to protect the collagen we already have.
Vitamin E: Vitamin E is often pair with Vitamin C in serums because they work synergistically to help prevent damage from free radicals. Much like Vitamin C, the Vitamin E we consume helps to prevent free radical damage to our skin from stress, UV rays, and pollution.
