This guide explains how hyaluronic acid fillers work, what to expect during recovery, how to care for your treatment areas, common questions, and when you should contact our office.
-
Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are injectable gels designed to restore lost volume, enhance facial contours, improve facial balance, and soften lines and folds.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule found throughout the body. One of its primary functions is attracting and retaining water, helping keep the skin hydrated, smooth, and resilient.
When strategically placed beneath the skin, dermal fillers can:
Restore youthful facial volume
Enhance facial harmony
Improve facial proportions
Support areas affected by age-related volume loss
Hydrate tissues
Improve contour and definition
At Spindrift Aesthetics, every filler treatment is customized to your facial anatomy using a conservative, natural-looking approach.
-
Hyaluronic acid fillers may be used to enhance or restore:
Lips
Cheeks
Chin
Jawline
Temples
Nasolabial folds (smile lines)
Marionette lines
Perioral lines
Facial balancing
Selected under-eye concerns in appropriate candidates
Every treatment begins with a comprehensive consultation and individualized treatment plan.
-
Unlike wrinkle relaxers, which temporarily reduce muscle movement, dermal fillers restore structural support by replacing volume beneath the skin.
Hyaluronic acid attracts water, integrates with your natural tissues, and provides immediate improvement while continuing to settle over the following days.
Following treatment, mild swelling is expected. As swelling resolves and the filler integrates into the surrounding tissues, your final results become more apparent.
-
Immediately After Treatment
It is normal to experience:
Mild swelling
Redness
Tenderness
Temporary firmness
Injection site bumps
Mild asymmetry
These findings are a normal part of the healing process.
Days 1–3
Swelling is typically greatest during the first several days.
Bruising, if present, often becomes more noticeable before gradually improving.
Lips and under-eye treatments may swell more than other facial areas.
Days 4–7
Most swelling begins to improve.
The filler gradually settles into the surrounding tissues.
The treated area becomes softer and more natural in appearance.
Two Weeks
By approximately two weeks:
Swelling has largely resolved.
Bruising has healed.
The filler has integrated into the surrounding tissues.
Final results can be properly evaluated.
This is the ideal time for your follow-up assessment if recommended.
-
Following these recommendations helps minimize swelling, bruising, and discomfort while supporting optimal healing.
During the First 24 Hours
Avoid:
Strenuous exercise
Alcohol
Hot tubs
Saunas
Steam rooms
Excessive heat
Facial massage unless specifically instructed
Remain well hydrated throughout the day.
Swelling Management
To reduce swelling:
Sleep with your head elevated the first night.
Apply cool compresses intermittently (do not place ice directly on the skin).
Limit excessive sodium intake.
Stay hydrated.
Swelling varies depending on the treatment area and individual healing response.
Skin Care
You may gently cleanse your face the evening of treatment.
Avoid aggressive facial massage, exfoliation, or facial devices until your provider advises it is safe to resume.
Makeup
If injection sites have stopped bleeding, makeup may generally be applied after several hours using clean brushes or applicators.
Results Continue to Improve
Although improvement is immediate, your final result develops as swelling resolves and the filler naturally integrates with your tissues.
Please allow approximately two weeks before evaluating your final outcome.
-
How long does filler swelling last?
Most swelling improves significantly within 3–7 days, although subtle swelling may continue to resolve over approximately two weeks.
Can I exercise after filler?
Avoid strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours following your treatment.
Strenuous exercise can increase swelling and discomfort. Excessive sweating can promote bacteria on the skin—especially when at the gym.
Light walking is generally acceptable.
Can I sleep on my side?
If possible, sleep on your back with your head elevated during the first night to help minimize swelling.
When can I wear makeup?
If injection sites are closed and there is no active bleeding, makeup may generally be applied later the same day using clean applicators.
Will my filler look natural?
At Spindrift Aesthetics, our philosophy is facial balancing—not overfilling.
Our goal is to restore proportion, soften signs of aging, and enhance your natural features while preserving facial expression and individuality.
How long do hyaluronic acid fillers last?
Longevity varies based on:
Product used
Treatment area
Individual metabolism
Lifestyle
Muscle activity
Most HA fillers last approximately 6–18 months, depending on the product and area treated.
