Lip Filler Recovery Guide | Spindrift Aesthetics—St. Pete
Lip Filler Aftercare
Everything You Need to Know After Your Lip Filler Treatment
At Spindrift Aesthetics in St. Petersburg, Florida, we believe your treatment doesn't end when you leave our office—it begins. Whether your lips were enhanced with Juvéderm®, Juvéderm® Ultra XC, Restylane® Kysse, Restylane® Silk, RHA®, or another hyaluronic acid (HA) lip filler, proper aftercare is essential to achieving soft, balanced, and natural-looking results.
Because the lips are highly vascular and in constant motion, they typically experience more swelling than other areas of the face. Fortunately, this is a normal part of the healing process.
This guide explains how lip fillers work, what to expect during recovery, aftercare recommendations, frequently asked questions, and when to contact our office.
-
Lip filler is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that uses hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers to enhance lip shape, restore lost volume, improve hydration, define the lip border, and create better facial balance.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the skin that attracts and binds water, providing hydration and soft, flexible volume.
At Spindrift Aesthetics, our philosophy is to create lips that complement your natural facial features—not overpower them.
Lip filler can be used to:
Add subtle volume
Improve lip symmetry
Define the Cupid's bow
Enhance the vermilion border
Improve hydration
Soften vertical lip lines
Restore age-related volume loss
-
Hyaluronic acid filler is strategically placed within the lips to provide support, hydration, and definition.
Immediately after treatment, the lips often appear larger than expected due to normal swelling. Over the following several days, swelling gradually resolves as the filler integrates with your natural tissues and attracts water.
Your final results become more apparent as healing progresses.

Immediately After Treatment
It is normal to experience:
Moderate swelling
Tenderness
Redness
Mild bruising
Temporary firmness
Small injection site bumps
The lips often appear larger than the final result during this stage.
Days 1–3
Swelling typically reaches its peak during the first 24–72 hours.
You may notice:
Uneven swelling
Bruising
Increased sensitivity
Temporary asymmetry
This is expected and usually improves quickly.
Days 4–7
Swelling begins to decrease.
The lips gradually soften.
Bruising fades.
Your lip shape becomes more balanced.
Two Weeks
By approximately 14 days:
Most swelling has resolved.
Bruising has healed.
The filler has settled.
Final results can be accurately assessed.
If recommended, this is the ideal time for your follow-up appointment.
-
Following these recommendations helps minimize swelling and bruising while supporting optimal healing.
During the First 24 Hours
Avoid:
Strenuous exercise
Alcohol
Hot tubs
Saunas
Steam rooms
Excessive heat
Smoking or vaping when possible
Excessive pressure on the lips
Remain well hydrated throughout the day.
Swelling Management
To reduce swelling:
Apply cool compresses gently for short intervals.
Sleep with your head elevated the first night.
Stay hydrated.
Limit excessive sodium intake.
Swelling is often greatest the morning after treatment and gradually improves.
Eating & Drinking
Choose softer foods if your lips feel tender.
Avoid very hot foods and beverages until the numbness (if present) has completely worn off.
Drink plenty of water.
Kissing & Lip Pressure
Avoid excessive pressure on the lips, including prolonged kissing, aggressive lip massage, or use of lip-plumping devices for approximately 24–48 hours, unless otherwise directed by your provider.
Skin Care
Continue your normal skincare routine while avoiding aggressive exfoliation around the lips during the first several days.
Keep the lips moisturized with a gentle lip balm as recommended.

Why are my lips so swollen?
The lips contain a rich blood supply, making swelling a completely normal part of the healing process. Most swelling improves significantly within the first week.
Will my lips stay this big?
No.
The initial fullness is largely due to swelling. Your lips will gradually soften and settle into their final appearance over approximately two weeks.
Can I wear lipstick?
It is generally best to avoid lipstick or lip gloss until any pinpoint bleeding has resolved and the lips feel comfortable, usually later the same day or the following day.
Can I exercise?
Avoid strenuous exercise for approximately 24 hours to minimize swelling and bruising.
How long does lip filler last?
Longevity varies depending on the product used, your metabolism, and lifestyle.
Most hyaluronic acid lip fillers last approximately 6–12 months, although results vary from person to person.
Will my lips feel hard?
Temporary firmness is common during the first several days.
As swelling resolves and the filler integrates with your tissues, your lips typically become softer and more natural.
