Collagen Isn't the Whole Story: Why Collagen and Elastin Are the Foundation of Healthy, Youthful Skin
When we talk about aging skin, collagen gets most of the attention. We hear about collagen supplements, collagen-stimulating treatments, collagen banking, and products promising to “boost collagen.”
And collagen absolutely matters. But collagen isn't the whole story.
Healthy, youthful-looking skin relies on an intricate support system that includes collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid, healthy cellular function, and the extracellular matrix that holds it all together. As we age and as our skin accumulates years of sun exposure, this support system gradually changes.
The result isn't simply wrinkles.
Skin becomes thinner. Elasticity decreases. Fine lines become more noticeable. Pigmentation appears. Texture changes. Facial contours begin to shift. And that youthful ability of the skin to look firm, smooth, and resilient gradually diminishes.
Understanding why these changes happen is one of the most important parts of creating an intelligent long-term aesthetic plan.
At Spindrift Aesthetics, the approach to aging isn't simply about chasing individual wrinkles. It's about understanding what is happening beneath the surface and supporting the structures responsible for healthy, beautiful skin in the first place.
What Actually Happens to Our Skin as We Age?
Facial aging is incredibly complex and what we see in the mirror is the result of changes that are occurring simultaneously in multiple layers of the face. We can see the changes in our skin, but what we don’t see are the changes to the underlying fat compartments, muscles, ligaments, and even the facial skeleton.
Within the skin itself, two particularly important structural proteins begin to change: collagen and elastin.
Collagen provides strength and support.
Elastin provides flexibility and recoil.
Together, these proteins are the components of what gives our skin its youthful firmness, thickness, resilience, and ability to bounce back.
As we age, collagen production slows and existing collagen becomes increasingly fragmented (damaged) and disorganized. Elastin fibers also undergo structural changes and lose their ability to function as efficiently.
Environmental factors, particularly chronic ultraviolet exposure, can accelerate the damage and destruction of these essential proteins.
This is one reason two people of the same chronological age can have dramatically different skin.
Your birthday matters. But so does everything your skin has experienced along the way.
Collagen: The Structural Framework of Your Skin
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and one of the primary structural components of the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin.
Think of collagen as the support beams within a building.
Those beams provide strength and structural integrity. When they are abundant, organized, and healthy, the structure is strong. As those supports gradually weaken, the structure begins to change. Our skin behaves similarly.
Fibroblasts are specialized cells within connective tissue and are responsible for producing collagen and other components of the extracellular matrix. Types I and III collagen are particularly important within the skin.
When we are young, our skin contains a dense amount of this organized collagen network.
Over time, collagen synthesis slows while degradation and fragmentation increase. The collagen network becomes less organized, and the dermis gradually becomes thinner.
As collagen degradation increases with age and production of collagen slows, it manifests in symptoms like:
Fine lines
Crepey skin
Decreased firmness
Changes in texture
Loss of that dense, healthy appearance we associate with younger skin.
Hormonal changes can accelerate this process as well. Women may experience a particularly significant change in skin collagen around menopause as estrogen levels decline.
This is why a thoughtful anti-aging strategy shouldn't suddenly begin when someone develops their first deep wrinkle.
Ideally, we begin thinking about preserving and supporting collagen long before significant structural changes become visible.
Elastin: The Part of Skin Aging We Don't Talk About Enough
If collagen provides structure, elastin provides bounce.
Elastin is an incredibly resilient protein that allows tissues to stretch and then return toward their original shape. You can see elasticity in action when you gently pinch youthful skin and watch it quickly return to its resting position.
Collagen gives the skin strength.
Elastin helps it recoil.
And elastin is particularly interesting because our ability to produce high-quality functional elastin is greatest earlier in life. Unlike collagen, which can be remodeled and stimulated throughout adulthood, restoring the sophisticated elastic fiber network found in youthful skin is much more difficult.
That makes protecting the elastin we already have extremely important.
Unfortunately, one of elastin's greatest enemies is something we encounter nearly every day. The sun.
The Sun Is Aging Your Skin Faster Than You Think
The term basking in the sun often yields an idea of relaxing on the beach or next to a pool soaking up that sunshine. However, excessive sun exposure is anything less than relaxing for our skin.
Ultraviolet radiation contributes significantly to photoaging, the premature aging of skin caused by repeated sun exposure. Just like an X-ray, UV rays are not visible …but they’re damaging.
UVA radiation penetrates deeper into the skin and contributes to oxidative stress, collagen breakdown, and changes within elastic fibers.
UVB radiation is strongly associated with sunburn and direct DNA damage and plays an important role in the development of skin cancers.
Both matter.
And sun damage is cumulative.
It's not simply the week you forgot sunscreen on vacation. It's driving, walking the doge, sitting near a sunny window, sitting outside during sporting events, boating, and walking around downtown. Years of small exposures accumulate.
One of the hallmark changes seen in chronically sun-exposed skin is solar elastosis. Instead of maintaining an organized network of healthy elastic fibers, damaged and abnormal elastic material accumulates within the dermis.
Clinically, we may eventually see this as skin that appears thicker, leathery, yellowed, deeply wrinkled, or less resilient.
This is one reason sunscreen isn't simply about preventing sunburn. I often hear people say, ‘Oh I don’t need sunscreen because I don’t burn’. Ongoing sun exposure is damaging to our skin just as ongoing, repeated exposure to X-rays can be damaging to our DNA. The two are different only in their forms of ionizing radiation.
Daily sun protection is one of the most important (AND PROVEN) anti-aging treatments available.
You can invest in lasers, collagen stimulation, injectables, skincare, and every advanced treatment available, but if UV exposure continues damaging the structures we're trying to preserve, we're constantly working against ourselves.
Aging Is About Much More Than Wrinkles
This brings us to one of the biggest misconceptions in aesthetics:
Wrinkles are not the same thing as aging.
A wrinkle is simply one visible manifestation of a much larger process.
Facial aging can involve changes in:
Collagen density and organization
Elastic fibers
Skin hydration
Pigmentation
Vascularity
Facial fat compartments
Ligament support
Muscle activity
Bone structure
This explains why simply filling a line or relaxing a muscle doesn't necessarily make skin look healthier.
You can soften movement beautifully with a neuromodulator and still have significant sun damage, poor texture, laxity, or loss of dermal support.
You can replace volume with filler and still have skin that doesn't reflect light well because its surface is rough and pigmented.
The best aesthetic outcomes often happen when we stop treating isolated symptoms and begin looking at the face and skin as a complete biological system.
Botox Is Excellent, But It Doesn't Do Everything
I love neuromodulators when they're used appropriately.
Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, and similar treatments are incredibly effective at reducing excessive muscular movement and softening dynamic expression lines.
But they aren't collagen treatments.
They don't correct sun damage.
They don't meaningfully improve pigmentation.
They don't restore damaged elastic fibers.
And they don't address every component of skin aging.
The same applies to dermal filler.
Filler can be extremely useful when someone truly needs structural support or volume restoration. But replacing volume isn't the same thing as improving the biological quality of the skin covering that volume.
This is why modern aesthetic medicine is increasingly moving toward a more comprehensive philosophy:
Don't simply change the face. Improve the tissue.
From Anti-Aging to Regenerative Aesthetics
The term "anti-aging" has been used for decades, but I've never loved the implication that aging itself is something we need to fight.
Aging is inevitable.
How our skin ages, however, can be influenced.
That's where regenerative aesthetics becomes so interesting.
Rather than relying exclusively on treatments that temporarily alter movement or replace volume, regenerative aesthetics focuses on encouraging the body's own biological processes to improve tissue quality.
Depending on the treatment, that may include stimulating fibroblast activity, encouraging collagen remodeling, improving skin texture, addressing pigmentation, or supporting healthier tissue.
The goal isn't to make someone look twenty years younger overnight.
It's to help the skin function and age better over time.
That philosophy is also behind something you may hear called collagen banking.
What Is Collagen Banking?
Collagen banking doesn't mean we literally store collagen somewhere for later.
It's a useful way of describing a preventive approach to skin aging.
Instead of waiting until substantial collagen loss, laxity, and textural changes have occurred, we begin supporting collagen earlier and continue doing so consistently over time.
Think about exercise.
You wouldn't wait until age 70 to decide muscle mass matters.
You build and maintain muscle throughout adulthood because preserving strength is easier than trying to rebuild everything after decades of decline.
I think about collagen similarly.
A thoughtful aesthetic plan might include sun protection, retinoids when appropriate, adequate nutrition, healthy lifestyle habits, and periodic treatments designed to stimulate or remodel collagen.
The goal isn't perfection.
It's preservation.
Where XERF Fits Into Collagen-Focused Aesthetics
One of the reasons I incorporated XERF into Spindrift Aesthetics was its alignment with this philosophy.

This is where treatments targeting the more superficial layers of the skin become important.

For the right patient, these approaches can complement one another beautifully.
Rather than asking, "Which treatment is best?"
A better question is:
What is my skin actually showing us, and what biological processes do we need to address?
That's how we build a treatment plan instead of simply choosing a treatment from a menu.
Can We Rebuild Elastin?
This deserves some nuance. You'll frequently see treatments advertised as "building collagen and elastin." Biology is more complicated than a marketing slogan. Collagen remodeling in adult skin is relatively well established and is one of the primary mechanisms behind several energy-based aesthetic technologies.
Elastin is different.
The sophisticated elastic fiber network developed earlier in life is difficult to recreate fully once it has been significantly damaged. Research continues into how various energy-based technologies and regenerative approaches may influence elastin production and organization, but we should be careful about promising that a treatment can simply "replace lost elastin."
That makes prevention incredibly valuable.
Protecting skin from chronic UV exposure may be one of the best things we can do to preserve both collagen and the integrity of the elastic fiber network over time.
In other words:
SPF isn't the boring part of your aesthetic plan. It may be the most important part.
Your Collagen Strategy Starts Outside the Treatment Room
Technology is powerful, but beautiful skin isn't created by a device alone.
Several everyday habits influence skin aging and overall health.
Protect Your Skin From UV Exposure
Broad-spectrum sunscreen should be part of your daily routine—not just something you wear at the beach.
Hats, sunglasses, shade, and avoiding unnecessary peak UV exposure matter too.
Eat Enough Protein
Collagen is a protein. Your body requires amino acids to build and repair tissues.
This doesn't mean drinking collagen powder guarantees younger skin, but adequate overall nutrition matters tremendously for tissue health.
Don't Forget Vitamin C
Vitamin C plays an essential role in normal collagen synthesis and also functions as an antioxidant.
Consider a Retinoid
Retinoids remain among the most evidence-supported topical ingredients available for photoaging and skin quality.
Not everyone tolerates the same product or strength, so skincare should be individualized.
Exercise
Exercise isn't simply about weight.
Resistance training helps preserve muscle mass, supports metabolic health, and is strongly associated with healthy aging overall.
Aesthetics and longevity shouldn't exist in completely separate worlds.
Sleep
Repair processes happen while you sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation affects far more than whether you look tired the following morning.
Don't Smoke
Smoking dramatically accelerates visible skin aging and negatively affects tissue health and wound healing.
Be Thoughtful About Alcohol
Chronic excessive alcohol intake can affect hydration, inflammation, sleep quality, nutrition, and overall health, all of which eventually show up in our skin.
The Goal Isn't to Never Age
I don't believe successful aesthetics means trying to look 25 forever.
And I certainly don't believe every sign of aging needs to be corrected.
The goal is to help you look like the healthiest, most vibrant version of yourself as you move through every decade of life.
Sometimes that involves Botox.
Sometimes filler.
Sometimes collagen stimulation.
Sometimes laser.
And sometimes the most important prescription I can give you is sunscreen, strength training, better skincare, and patience.
The exciting part about modern aesthetics is that we're learning to think beyond individual wrinkles.
We're looking at collagen.
We're looking at elastin.
We're looking at skin quality.
We're looking at facial structure.
We're looking at lifestyle.
And increasingly, we're looking at how all of these pieces interact over decades—not simply what we can change before your next event.
Invest in the Skin You'll Have Ten Years From Now
You don't have to wait until your skin feels lax or deeply sun damaged to start thinking about how it will age.
In fact, that's precisely the point.
The best long-term aesthetic plan isn't necessarily the one that involves the most treatments.
It's the one that identifies what your skin needs, protects what you already have, and intervenes thoughtfully when there's a reason to do so.
